You've made the decision to get a dog, recognizing it's a significant step for your family. You all concur that you're prepared for the responsibility. Whether you're considering various breeds or have your heart set on a Golden Retriever, there are some crucial things to be aware of before finalizing your choice.

Avoid getting a Golden Retriever if:
- You have a dog hair allergy or dislike frequent vacuuming due to shedding.
- You're not prepared for a voracious eater, aka a "trash can" dog.
- You're not ready for exuberant displays of joy when you return home.
- You don't enjoy dog "kisses and cuddles"
- You have ornamental plants that are toxic and you're unwilling to part with them.
- You own chickens, ducks, turkeys, or similar pets.

Get a Golden Retriever if:
- You enjoy spending time in nature.
- You like going for walks.
- You want a dog that is always thrilled to be with you.
- You desire a dog that selflessly stands by your side.
- You prefer a easily trainable dog.
- You seek an exceptionally intelligent breed.
- You want a dog that can be comfortably left with a child.
- You prefer a dog that doesn't bark excessively.
- You desire a dog that is friendly with other dogs.
- You want a cuddly dog that enjoys snuggling in bed.
- You are willing to vacuum frequently due to shedding.
- You are prepared for regular grooming.

HOWEVER, EVERY RULE HAS ITS EXCEPTIONS...
As the title suggests, the above statements are generally true, but exceptions exist. While golden retrievers were originally bred for retrieving feathered game from the water, their function has evolved. Although they still excel at fetching balls, dummies, sticks, and Frisbees, don't be surprised if your dog decides to bring you a neighbor's chicken or a park-found pigeon.
Breeders undergo a test of natural traits with their dogs, focusing on retrieving wild game while being shot. Some go further, preparing their dogs for demanding work tests in bringing, requiring time, effort, and discipline mastery. Genetics play a role; your city-trained, leash-walking puppy may unleash an avid hunting instinct because it's in their genes.
Witnessing a golden retriever sprinting passionately to retrieve, grabbing an item, and returning at full speed is a beautiful sight. Equally beautiful is watching them tirelessly fetch from the water, returning the object and eagerly asking for 'more'.
The breed's popularity has resulted in some golden retrievers becoming timid, less interested in retrieving, and lacking energy for activity. It's crucial to locate a reputable and honest breeder who remains supportive throughout your dog's life. Contact your local breed club to find a trustworthy breeder!
